After the weather has passed, look at the exterior from the ground. Missing roofing, loose siding, damaged gutters, and new interior stains are reasons to arrange an inspection. A neighboring home’s damage or a report of large hail cannot establish what happened to your own roof.
Record the exterior by area
Photograph each affected side of the home and note the location of loose or missing materials. Keep clear of downed lines, unstable trees, and hanging debris. Leave roof access and close inspection of elevated damage to a properly equipped professional.
Ask what the inspection establishes
Request photos that distinguish observed damage from normal wear or an unresolved concern. A written scope should identify the proposed repair area, materials, and any further investigation. Ask why a localized repair or a larger replacement is appropriate.
Coordinate related repairs
A roof and siding project may also involve gutters, windows, or flashing transitions. Compare those areas across the scope so responsibilities are clear. If you report a claim, notify your insurer promptly and save the inspection findings with its written estimate. Read about damage documentation and insurance scopes.
